The Fuss About Butts
by Tamekia Reece, 10.22.03
With music stars telling people to "back that thang up" and boasting to the whole world how bootylicious their bods are, it's no wonder that bottoms get top priority. From fashion magazines to everyday news, everyone's obsessing. Gosh, it's only a butt, so what's all the fuss about?
Guys on Butts
Guys have always been big fans of girls' glutes, but now with low-rise jeans showing major butt cleavage and velour sweatsuits sporting enticing messages, guys are in tush heaven.
Some guys get excited over small, narrow butts, and others guys go absolutely crazy over what Missy Elliot calls a "badunk-a-dunk" butt. Jerome, 16, says, "There's nothing sexier than a female with a lot of backside."
When asked what they think of their own butts, most guys agree that smaller is better. "It just doesn't look right for a guy to have a huge butt," says Adam, 15.
Could it be that guys like their own butts tiny so they won't have anything to hold their pants up with? Johnny, 18, thinks so. "Big butts don't look good in baggy pants."
But Adrian, 17, likes his boyfriend's big booty. "My guy looks great in anything!"
Girls on Butts
Since guys are obsessed with butts, of course, girls are, too, though for totally different reasons. Guys obsess about and appreciate rumps, but girls mainly worry if their tushes are too big, too small, whatever.
Michelle, 17, says, "I really wish I had a little extra meat back there." She feels that her narrow behind is much too small to get guys' attention.
On the other hand, Tiffany, 15, says, "I'm tired of guys trying to get with me because I have a big butt. If it was smaller, I think they'd respect me more."
And girls who like girls? "I think a big butt is gorgeous on a girl," says Anita, 15. Charlene, 17, agrees, "Big butts on girls is like the best thing ever."
Build a Better Butt?
Girls often want what they don't have, even when it comes to their tailbones. Girls with smaller butts are exercising to try to get a shapelier rear, and girls with fuller ones are exercising, too, trying to make their bottoms look smaller.
Some girls go as far as to get butt implants! But for those who just want a quick boost, there are butt pads inserts that a girl (or even a guy for that matter) can wear in her jeans so it'll look as though she's packing like J-Lo.
Most guys seem to be comfortable with what they have and don't complain about size. However, they do worry about reactions to hair and acne on their lovable cheeks. Timothy, 19, says, "It's embarrassing, but I actually shave my butt." He says his hairiness isn't a major issue, though. "I'm able to cope with it," he states. Besides, lots of people have hair on their butts.
Booty Self-Esteem
"I asked my mom to buy me some padding, but she wouldn't," states Emily, 14. "She says I should be happy with what I've got."
Emily's mom is right! Everyone's body is different and there is no such thing as a perfect butt. You shouldn't feel like you have to have a butt like J-Lo, Beyoncé, or other apple-bottom honeys, as Nelly would call them. Whatever size and shape your bum is, it's normal. Though you may think it's either too small or too big, it's guaranteed that there's someone out there wishing for a butt just like yours. So don't be bummed, appreciate your booty for what it is! |
