Your Question:

Dear Experts,

I have been using NuvaRing for over a year now. I would like to stop using it but not get pregnant. I would like to know how long do I have to wait until I can resume safe intercourse with a condom after I stop using the Ring. When do I take it out and do I have to wait until one full cycle before I can resume sexual activities?

curiousquestion

The Answer:

Dear curiousquestion,

It is safe to have sexual intercourse as soon as you remove the ring. Condoms are 85-98 percent effective against pregnancy, and condoms reduce the risk of pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

When used correctly, the ring is 99.7 percent effective against pregnancy, but it does not protect against STIs. One ring protects against pregnancy for one month. A ring stays in the vagina for three weeks. At the beginning of the fourth week, a woman removes it and throws it away. Usually a woman's period will start within two or three days of taking out the ring. After the ring has been out for a week, a woman will insert a new ring (even if she still has her period) or discontinue using the ring.

Hope this information helps!

Take care,
