Your Question:

Dear Experts,

I'm 18 years old and i have been pregnant before when i was 14 years old. i had an abortion, but now all of a sudden i have a clear liquid coming out of my breast. What is this? could it be from me being pregnant 4 years ago? what do i do? Am i pregnant again?

diva2007

The Answer:

Dear diva2007,

Discharge from the nipples is not caused by a pregnancy or abortion that happened four years ago. Nipple discharge is normal and healthy — it's the body's way of keeping the nipple ducts open. It even happens to some guys.

The discharge may look like very thin milk, or it may be clear or light-green, grayish, or light yellow. Women who take birth control pills may have this discharge. It can happen during sexual arousal or at certain times in the menstrual cycle.

It is important to keep nipples clean by washing with warm water and soap so the discharge won't dry and build up. If the color, texture, or odor of the discharge changes, has pus or blood in it, or if it is brownish in color, visit your clinician — this change may be a symptom of an infection.
