Your Question:

Dear Experts,

I have recently taken the emergency contraception pill known as, Plan B. It had all sorts of side effects but I experienced none. I am worried is that normal to not experience any side effects.

alex_crotch

The Answer:

Dear alex_crotch,

Yes, this is normal. The side effects listed in any medication's packaging insert are "possible," but they do not happen all the time or for every person. Not all women experience side effects from taking emergency contraception (EC).

If started within five days of unprotected vaginal intercourse, EC can reduce the risk of unintended pregnancy. But the sooner the better. If started within 72 hours of unprotected sex, EC can reduce the risk of pregnancy by 75 to 89 percent. If a woman takes EC and does not get her period within three weeks — or if she experiences symptoms of pregnancy — she should schedule a follow-up visit with her clinician to take a pregnancy test.
