Your Question:

Dear Experts,

My friend got TSS. She had to go to the hospital and the doctors didn't know what to do. She got better, but do most of the people with TSS get better? Is it rare to get TSS? How exactly do you get it and what is it?

aeb313

The Answer:

Dear aeb313,

TSS stands for toxic shock syndrome. It is a very rare condition that that is caused by certain kinds of bacteria in the bloodstream. TSS can happen if a woman uses a tampon all day and all night. For this reason, it's recommended that women change their tampon often, and use the lowest absorbent tampon possible.

Stop using tampons if you vomit and have a high fever, diarrhea, and a sunburn-type rash while using one. Tell your parents immediately, and see a health care provider right away.

Hope this information helps!

Take care,
