Your Question:

Dear Experts,

What are the symptoms of vaginitis?

massiel

The Answer:

Dear massiel,

One of the main symptoms of vaginitis is abnormal discharge. Normal vaginal discharge is usually either thick and whitish or slippery and clear, depending on where you are in your menstrual cycle. Normal vaginal discharge usually has a particular scent and doesn't cause itching or burning. However, if the odor changes or becomes unpleasant, or if you experience itching or burning, it's possible you have vaginitis. Sometimes, vaginitis is caused by sexually transmitted infection called trichomoniasis, so you want to be sure to have it checked out by a clinician.

If you think you have vaginitis, it's a good idea to refrain from sex play until you've been treated — it may make your symptoms worse and interfere with the treatment. And if it's caused by trichomoniasis, you and your partner may pass it back and forth until you are both treated. Tampons may aggravate vaginitis, so it's best to stick with pads if you have vaginitis during your period.

A health care provider can treat vaginitis. Call 1-800-230-PLAN to make an appointment at the Planned Parenthood nearest you.

Hope this information helps!
