Your Question:

Dear Experts,

how do you get tested for herpes?

chicka_09

The Answer:

Dear chicka_09,

A health care provider can test you for genital herpes through a blood test or by taking a swab from a herpes sore.

Some symptoms of herpes include

  • recurring rash with clusters of blistery sores appearing anywhere on the vagina, vulva, cervix, penis, anus, buttocks, or elsewhere on the body
  • pain and discomfort in the genital area
  • itching and burning sensations during urination
Millions of people have genital herpes and don't even know it because they have no symptoms - or their symptoms have been minor and have been overlooked. If you think you've been exposed to herpes or have symptoms (today or in the past) that sound like those described above, see your clinician. Although there is no cure for herpes, there are prescription drugs that treat the symptoms, reduce the number of recurrences, and reduce the risk of transmission.
