Your Question:
Dear Experts,
How do i tell my new boyfriend that i had an abortion before i met him?
Fatmama, 10.13.06
The Answer:
Dear Fatmama,
You don't have to tell your boyfriend, parents, or anyone else that you had an abortion. But communication and trust are important parts of any close relationship, and it's a good thing when both partners express themselves and share their feelings.
It's important to remember that any time you share personal information or discuss your feelings with somebody you are taking a risk. You may feel vulnerable or may get hurt in the process. Later on, your friend may even share your personal story with other people. You may want to ask yourself, "Why do I want to tell that story? Do I mind if other people find out about my story? Does my partner respect me? Do I trust him? Is he always honest with me? Am I always honest with him? Do we treat each other fairly and equally? Do we respect one another's privacy?" Many teens involved in relationships also find it helpful to have conversations with their partners about these important aspects of relationships.
Hope this information helps!
Take care,
