Your Question:

Dear Experts,

Can you have a miscarriage during sexual activity?

Panther

The Answer:

Dear Panther,

The fetus is well protected inside a woman's uterus, so it is not very likely that sexual activity could cause a miscarriage. Miscarriage is not caused by the physical activities of a healthy pregnant woman, such as jumping, vigorous exercise, or vaginal intercourse. Only rarely does any kind of physical trauma cause miscarriage. Stress and emotional shock do not cause it.

A miscarriage, or early pregnancy loss, is the natural, premature expulsion of a fetus from the uterus. It is also called spontaneous abortion and occurs in 15 percent to 20 percent of all pregnancies. Most miscarriages happen during the first trimester (first 12 weeks) of pregnancy.

Many miscarriages are caused because of an anatomic or genetic abnormality in the fetus. When a fetus is not developing normally, certain hormone levels drop, and the lining of the uterus begins to shed. The pregnancy separates from the uterus and passes out of the body.

Hope this information helps!
