Trichomoniasis is a common sexually transmitted infection that is passed by exchanging fluids during sexual activity, such as vaginal intercourse or mutual masturbation. A health care provider can diagnose it by examining vaginal fluids under a microscope, and it can be treated with medication. It takes from three to 28 days for symptoms of trichomoniasis to develop. Men who have trichomoniasis rarely have symptoms. Sometimes women don't have symptoms, either. Common symptoms include

• frothy, often unpleasant-smelling discharge
• itching in and around the vagina
• blood spotting in the discharge
• swelling in the groin
• urinating more often than usual — often with pain and burning.

Condoms reduce the risk of trichomoniasis infection.
