Your Question:

Dear Experts,

how long do I have to take to get the morning after pill?

stila0606

The Answer:

Dear stila0606,

Emergency contraception (EC) is also known as the "morning-after pill." EC can reduce the risk of pregnancy when started within 120 hours (five days) of unprotected sex. (It can be taken in one dose.) The sooner it is taken, the better. If started within 72 hours (three days) of unprotected sex, it can reduce the risk of pregnancy by 75 to 89 percent.

Women older than 18 can buy EC over the counter. Younger women need a prescription. If you have had unprotected sex within the last 120 hours and need an appointment to receive EC, please call 1-800-230-PLAN for the Planned Parenthood center nearest you.

Hope this information helps!

Take care,
