Your Question:

Dear Experts,

Can genital warts be cured with a topical solution?

The_boy213

The Answer:

Dear The_boy213,

There is no "cure" for genital warts, which are caused by certain kinds of HPV — a virus. But genital warts are harmless and can be removed. If they are not removed, they often go away by themselves. Sometimes, they return after they're removed.

There are several different ways to remove genital warts, including cryotherapy (freezing), electrocautery (burning), surgery, injection, or with certain kinds of prescription topical creams.

There are two types of topical creams that can be used to treat genital warts — Podofilox (brand name Condylox) and Imiquimod (brand name Aldara). Condylox works by treating the surface of the genital wart. Aldara works by stimulating a person's immune system to fight the virus from the inside.

Condylox and Aldara are for external genital warts only. Neither one should be used to treat HPV that occurs internally, such as on the cervix or inside the vagina.

Also, be aware that over-the-counter wart treatments, such as Compound W, should not be used on the genitals. These treatments are meant for the types of warts that commonly show up on other parts of the body, such as the hands, knees, and feet.

Just keep in mind that if you have a wart or bump, it's important to see a clinician for proper diagnosis — it is not a good idea to try to diagnose yourself. To find a Planned Parenthood health center near you, call 1-800-230-PLAN.
