Your Question:

Dear Experts,

I went to get a pap smear and pelvic exam done, and my Doctor told me that my uterus was backwards (something like that). Is this a common thing?

Nixiena

The Answer:

Dear Nixiena,

Yes, this is very common. The uterus is a hollow, muscular organ that is about three inches long and weighs about two ounces. It is the shape of a small pear. During pregnancy, the uterus grows in size and weight.

Most women have a uterus that is tilted forward or backward, at least slightly. The majority of women have a uterus that is tilted slightly forward, toward the bladder. This is called an anteverted uterus.

About 20 or 25 percent of women have a uterus that is tilted back, toward the rectum. This is called a retroverted uterus. These are both normal and neither position interferes with fertility. In some cases, however, a retroverted uterus is associated with endometriosis, a condition that can scar the fallopian tubes and cause infertility.

Hope this information helps!

Take care,
