Your Question:

Dear Experts,

I have a lot of itching down there — especially at night. It's on the outside areas only, where I shave. There is a lot of white discharge, but the odor is not too strong. Any idea what it is? Should I see a doctor?

The Answer:

Dear jordi0881,

Yes, it's best to have a health care provider make an accurate diagnosis. Itching is a very common symptom and can indicate any number of infections.

Itchiness after shaving is often a sign of a bikini line infection. These infections usually occur because a razor can pick up bacteria in the bikini area and drag it into the hair follicles. The hair follicles become infected, causing little bumps, redness, and itching.

Vaginal discharge is totally normal. The amount and texture of discharge may vary and can depend on a woman's menstrual cycle. Normal discharges can be thick or liquid-like and clear, whitish, or yellowish. Typical vaginal discharge may have a particular odor — and that's normal, too. However, if a girl notices that her discharge is foamy, that the odor changes or becomes unpleasant, or that she has itching or burning, then she may have vaginitis. Vaginitis is any irritation in the vagina.

To make an appointment to have a clinician diagnose any kind of genital itching or possible vaginitis, you can find the nearest Planned Parenthood health center by calling 1-800-230-PLAN.

Hope this information helps!
