Your Question:

Dear Experts,

are there any other ways to get rid of a pregnecy besides abortion or e.c.?

nickully

The Answer:

Dear nickully,

First things first — it's important to realize that emergency contraception pills (ECPs) and abortion are two different things.

ECPs do not "get rid" of a pregnancy — they can reduce the risk of a pregnancy before it occurs by preventing ovulation or fertilization. Abortion occurs once pregnancy has already begun — when the developing cells implant themselves into the lining of the uterus.

ECPs can reduce the risk of pregnancy if started within 120 hours of unprotected vaginal intercourse. The sooner they are taken, the better. ECPs work best when started within 72 hours after unprotected sex — during this time they can reduce the risk of pregnancy by 75 to 89 percent.

For teens who are dealing with an unwanted pregnancy, there are many things to consider, including the laws governing abortion in your state. Check out the articles below for more information, or call 1-800-230-PLAN to find a Planned Parenthood health center near you.

Hope this information helps!
