Your Question:
Dear Experts,
i've been on the patch for about a year and I really like it, but now i hear it's dangerous? should I stop using it?
chedda, 10.22.04
The Answer:
Dear chedda,
The patch, the pill, and the ring are not suggested for women who are 35 years old or older and who smoke or who are otherwise at increased risk of heart attack and stroke. That is why most health care providers will not prescribe them to women who have medical histories that increase the possibility of those risks.
Otherwise, the patch is a safe and effective form of birth control. In fact, more than four million women have safely used the patch since it was introduced in the U. S. two years ago. When used correctly, the patch is up to 99.7 percent effective against pregnancy.
There are, of course, potential side effects and risks associated with all medications, including the combined hormone methods of birth control, such as the patch, the pill, or the ring.
Hope this information helps!
Take care,
