Your Question:

Dear Experts,

I have been looking up information on genital warts. I have found a cream that is suppose to completely kill the virus so that you can never have a chance of spreading it yourself. Is it for real?

mistake12

The Answer:

Dear mistake12,

No, it's not for real. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for HPV, or any of the kinds of HPV that cause genital warts. But genital warts are not usually harmful, and they often go away by themselves. There are several different ways to remove genital warts, including cryotherapy (freezing), electrocautery (burning), surgery, injection, or with certain kinds of topical creams.

There are two types of topical cream that can be used to treat genital warts — Podofilox (brand name Condylox) and Imiquimod (brand name Aldara). Condylox works by treating the surface of the genital wart. Aldara works by stimulating a person's immune system to fight the virus from the inside.

Condylox and Aldara are for external genital warts only. Neither one should be used to treat HPV that occurs internally, such as on the cervix or inside the vagina.

Also, be aware that over-the-counter wart treatments, such as Compound W, should not be used on the genitals. These treatments are meant for the types of warts that commonly show up on other parts of the body, such as the hands, knees and feet.

Just keep in mind that if you have a wart or bump, it's important to see a clinician for proper diagnosis — it is not a good idea to try to diagnose yourself. To find a clinic near you, call 1-800-230-PLAN.

Hope this information helps!
