Your Question:
Dear Experts,
I heard that you can use plastic wrap, like the stuff you buy in grocery stores, to prevent infection during oral sex. I didn't believe it, but the person who told me insisted it was true. Is it?

The Answer:
Dear yackattack,
Actually, yes! Although the risk of infection is generally quite a bit lower with unprotected oral sex than with unprotected vaginal or anal sex, using a barrier can further decrease those risks. Some people use plastic wrap to cover the vulva or anus when giving oral sex although the Glyde dam (a thin piece of latex) is actually the only FDA-approved barrier for this kind of oral sex. Using a condom to cover the penis also makes oral sex safer.
Hope this information helps!
