Your Question:

Dear Experts,

My boyfriend and I have been together for almost 2 years and he all of a sudden had a genital warts breakout. We have had sex without a condom before so does that mean i have them also?

holllaa

The Answer:

Dear holllaa,

Genital warts are caused by certain types of HPV (human papilloma virus). The incubation period for genital warts is usually between three weeks and six months, but it may last for years after exposure — so a person who has this type of HPV may have a first outbreak of warts months or years after she or he has been infected.

Transmission of genital warts is more likely when a person is having an outbreak of warts, although it is possible for HPV to be transmitted when warts are not present. Transmission can happen through unprotected anal, vaginal, and oral sex, as well as skin-to-skin contact. Using latex condoms (for vaginal and anal sex, and oral sex on a man) and Glyde dams (for oral sex on a woman) can reduce the risk of transmission.

In any case, genital warts are basically harmless. They often go away on their own within a few months. If not, health care providers can easily treat or remove them. To make a confidential appointment at a Planned Parenthood health center near you, call 1-800-230-PLAN.

Hope this information helps!
