Your Question:

Dear Experts,

why does it feel like i have to pee when i have sex? i'm afraid that i'm going to!

mest_babe

The Answer:

Dear mest_babe,

There could be a number of reasons for this. Sometimes a finger or a penis inserted into the vagina can put pressure on the bladder, making a girl feel like she has to urinate. Also, if a girl's vagina or clitoris is being stimulated, she may be rubbing the opening of her urethra (located between the vagina and the clitoris), which might also make her feel like she has to urinate. Sometimes changing positions may help relieve this feeling.

Other girls might confuse the sensation of an orgasm — the pleasurable release of built-up muscle tension that results from arousal and sexual activity — with the urge to urinate. This might happen if they do not know what an orgasm feels like.

There's also the issue of female ejaculation. Ejaculation in both women and men involves the release of fluid from the urethra — the tube that carries urine out of the body — during intense sexual arousal. About 10 percent of women spurt a clear fluid from the urethra during intense sexual excitement or during orgasm. So feeling like you have to urinate could actually be a sign that you are going to ejaculate!

However, keep in mind that a constant urge to urinate can be a sign of a urinary tract infection (UTI). If you think that's a possibility, it would be a good idea to speak with a clinician. To find one in your area, call 1-800-230-PLAN.

Hope this information helps!
