Your Question:

Dear Experts,

I have heard that it should not be possible to urinate with an erect penis. However, if I wake up in the night needing to go to the toilet, I am often 'hard', but can still urinate. Is this a problem, or is it normal?

Eldenurin

The Answer:

Dear Eldenurin,

This is very normal. Middle-of-the-night and morning erections are usually different from those that are caused by sexual arousal. They happen because the body is often totally relaxed at various times during the night and just before we wake up. That's why many men urinate in the middle of the night and in the morning while their penises are erect.

Urination is not possible when the penis is fully erect from sexual arousal and ejaculation is about to occur. When ejaculation happens, the neck of the bladder closes, preventing semen from going backwards into the bladder and urine from mixing with the semen. This also makes urination difficult for a few minutes following ejaculation.

Hope this information helps!

Take care,
