Your Question:

Dear Experts,

I was at a party and I got drunk and woke up with a guy I don't know. I don't really know what happened but I'm scared we had sex and I don't know what to do.

vvv312

The Answer:

Dear vvv312,

That sounds like a really scary situation. First things first — if you are not on birth control and you don't want to be pregnant, you might want to consider emergency contraception pills (ECPs). ECPs can reduce the risk of pregnancy if started within 120 hours of unprotected vaginal intercourse. They work best when taken within 72 hours — during this time they can reduce the risk of pregnancy from 75 to 89 percent.

It might also be a good idea to make an appointment with a clinician who you can talk with about being tested for sexually transmitted infections. You can call 1-800-230-PLAN to reach the nearest Planned Parenthood clinic.

It's actually against the law to have sexual contact with a person who is incapacitated due to the use of drugs, alcohol, or prescription medications. Incapacitated is another way to say "really out of it," as in a situation where someone has passed out, or is just too drunk or high to think clearly. Making the choice to use alcohol or other drugs does not mean that you forfeit the sexual decision-making rights to your body.

Mixing sex with alcohol or other drugs increases the chances of unintended pregnancy and exposure to sexually transmitted infections. This is because when you have sex while you are drunk or high, you are much less likely to be thinking clearly enough to use condoms, or use them correctly.

Hope this information helps!

Take care,
