Your Question:

Dear Experts,

I'm sexually active, can i get a urinary tract infection (UTI) and how can i prevent it?

sft14

The Answer:

Dear sft14,

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are very common in women who are sexually active. Men can get them too. They are caused by bacteria that have spread from the rectum to the vagina, or the rectum to the penis, and then to the urethra and bladder.

To prevent urinary tract infections or discourage them from returning, try the following:
  • Drink when you are thirsty.
  • Urinate as soon as you feel the urge.
  • Drink unsweetened cranberry juice.
  • Urinate immediately before and after intercourse.
  • Avoid using any sexual position that seems to trigger UTIs.
  • Keep the pubic area clean and dry.
  • Use latex or female condoms during vaginal or anal intercourse.

Hope this information helps!

Take care,
