Your Question:
Dear Experts,
can you only get a yeast infection if you're not a virgin? or can virgins get yeast infections?

The Answer:
Dear Raneegurl,
Any woman can get a yeast infection, regardless of whether or not she's had sex. Yeast infections are not sexually transmitted. Here's how it works:
The vagina contains small amounts of a certain kind of fungal yeast, candida albicans. This is normal. However, outside factors such as taking certain antibiotics or normal hormone fluctuations can cause the yeast in the vagina to overgrow. When this happens, a yeast infection develops, which often causes an unpleasant vaginal discharge and/or an intense itching around the vagina and vulva.
A woman who thinks she has a yeast infection should visit a clinician for an accurate diagnosis. There are vaginal infections besides yeast that share similar symptoms of itchiness, painfulness, and discharge. Treatments may include either prescription or over-the-counter medication.
