Your Question:

Dear Experts,

can you only get a yeast infection if you're not a virgin? or can virgins get yeast infections?

Raneegurl

The Answer:

Dear Raneegurl,

Any woman can get a yeast infection, regardless of whether or not she's had sex. Yeast infections are not sexually transmitted. Here's how it works:

The vagina contains small amounts of a certain kind of fungal yeast, candida albicans. This is normal. However, outside factors — such as taking certain antibiotics or normal hormone fluctuations — can cause the yeast in the vagina to overgrow. When this happens, a yeast infection develops, which often causes an unpleasant vaginal discharge and/or an intense itching around the vagina and vulva.

A woman who thinks she has a yeast infection should visit a clinician for an accurate diagnosis. There are vaginal infections besides yeast that share similar symptoms of itchiness, painfulness, and discharge. Treatments may include either prescription or over-the-counter medication.
