Your Question:

Dear Experts,

I know i have an STD but i am afraid to ask my parents to get me checked. im afraid if i wait too long the disease will get worse and will become harder to get rid of. what should i do?

2sweet2388

The Answer:

Dear 2sweet2388,

It is extremely important to get tested and treated as soon as possible. Without treatment, some sexually transmitted infections can lead to very serious health problems, including sterility and even death. Many infections are easily treatable with medication, while others require more extensive care and treatment.

Even though you may be scared, it's very important to see a clinician as soon as possible. The sooner you are diagnosed, the sooner you can be treated. Don't let embarrassment or fear prevent you from taking care of yourself.

The best option is to call Planned Parenthood and schedule an appointment for testing and an exam. The counselors and health clinicians there are trained to work with teenagers and other clients who may be nervous about addressing serious issues like sexually transmitted infections.

Remember, Planned Parenthood health centers are completely confidential and do not require parental permission for health services. All Planned Parenthood centers are committed to providing services to teens at the lowest possible cost. Many Planned Parenthood centers offer services on a sliding scale.
