Your Question:
Dear Experts,
I have condoms that have non-oxynol 9 spermicide in them. It says that it kills sperm. But then i also read in a magazine that non-oxynol 9 could also increase the chances of pregnancy. i'm so confused. How effective is a condom with non-oxynol 9 spermicide?

The Answer:
Dear hotgurl_30,
Good question. Any condom will reduce the risk of pregnancy and infection. However, new studies show that while nonoxynol-9 (N-9) provides some protection against pregnancy, it does not reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections. This is because N-9 may irritate the vagina, vulva, penis, or rectum. Studies show that these irritations can increase the risk of infection if N-9 is used many times a day, for anal intercourse, or by women at risk of HIV.
The bottom line is that any kind of condom is better than none. Except in the three examples given above, all condoms greatly reduce the risk of pregnancy and infection. Using lubricant makes the condom safer because it is less likely to break or tear. It also makes sex more comfortable.
Remember, only use water-based lubricants like K-Y jelly or Astroglide with latex condoms. Oil-based lubricants can damage latex, making the condom more likely to break.
Hope this information helps!
