Your Question:

Dear Experts,

Are there different types of Birth Control Pills for people who are sexually active from those who are not?

Nitty

The Answer:

Dear Nitty,

There are many different brands of birth control pills, but the type that is prescribed to any particular individual does not depend on sexual activity.

Each brand of the Pill can protect against pregnancy and offer non-contraceptive benefits, such as more regular, shorter periods with less menstrual flow and cramping.

The brand of pill prescribed depends on the dosage of hormones in the pill and a woman's health. A clinician will be able to help you determine which birth control pill is best for you.

The Pill is one of the most popular and effective methods of birth control — 92 to 99 percent effective, depending on whether or not it is taken every day.

Combination pills come in 28-day or 21-day packs. In the 28-day pack, 21 pills are "active" — they contain hormones that prevent pregnancy. The last seven pills in the pack of combination pills are called "reminder" pills. They do not contain hormones. They are taken during the fourth week, including during menstruation. Stay on schedule and the Pill will provide protection every month.

Remember, the Pill offers no protection against sexually transmitted infections — only condoms offer protection.
