Your Question:

Dear Experts,

How do I know what kind of lubricant is safe and will not break the condom? Will Lotion or baby oil break a condom? HELP !

hotinstuf

The Answer:

Dear hotinstuf,

Good for you for using condoms! However, it's NOT a good idea to use lotion or baby oil (or Vaseline) with condoms, because these are oil-based products. Oil damages latex condoms and makes them more likely to break.

Instead, use a water-based, "condom-friendly" lubricant, like K-Y jelly or Astroglide. A safe lubricant to use should say "water-based" and/or "safe for use with latex condoms" on the package.

Condoms can be purchased in drugstores or from vending machines. They are often free at Planned Parenthood health centers, other family planning clinics, and most public health departments. Call 1-800-230-PLAN to be connected to the nearest Planned Parenthood health center.

Hope this information helps!
