Your Question:
Dear Experts,
I would like to know Is it bad to have bacteria in your vagina?
00zap, 11.01.02
The Answer:
Dear 00zap,
Having a certain amount of bacteria in the vagina is normal and healthy. Some bacteria protect the vagina from infection. However, sometimes, a change in the balance of different kinds of bacteria in the vagina can cause a condition called bacterial vaginosis (BV).
BV is not always sexually transmitted. However, women who are sexually active run a high risk of developing the condition. BV can develop when an external factor, such as sexual contact, disrupts the balance between bacteria that protect the vagina from infection and those that don't.
Some "strictly" sexually transmitted infections are bacterial, like chlamydia and gonorrhea. These infections will also affect the vulva and vagina as well as other sexual and reproductive body parts. Condoms can reduce the risk of BV and other bacterial infections.
If you think you may have a vaginal infection, make an appointment with a clinician for a checkup.
Hope this information helps!
