Your Question:

Dear Experts,

Yes ive been noticing lately that my vagina has an unpleasant odor to it...how can i get rid of it so i wont be afraid to have sex with my boyfriend?

Sk8erChic9

The Answer:

Dear Sk8erChic9,

It's totally normal for healthy girls and women to have vaginal discharge which may have a particular odor. The amount and texture of discharge may vary and can depend on a woman's menstrual cycle. Normal discharges can be thick or liquid-like and clear, whitish, or yellowish.

Many women become concerned that other people can detect their vaginal odor. In reality, women are most sensitive to their own odor, and it is very unlikely that others smell it. However, women who are concerned about vaginal odor sometimes prefer to shower and wash the vaginal area before engaging in sexual activities. But keep in mind, all women have an odor from their vulvas, and it's totally normal. In fact, some partners really like the way their partner's vulvas smell.

However, if a girl notices a significant change in her discharge such as discharge that is foamy, bad smelling, or itching and burning, then she may have vaginitis or a sexually transmitted infection.

Vaginitis is any irritation in the vagina, and it can cause abnormal discharge. Some signs to watch out for are
  • changes in color, quantity, or texture of the vaginal fluid
  • unpleasant odors
  • bleeding, spotting, or bloody discoloration
  • itching and/or burning of the vagina or vulva
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, make an appointment to get a physical exam. Call 1-800-230-PLAN to be connected to the nearest Planned Parenthood center.

Hope this information helps!
