Your Question:
Dear Experts,
Can you use birth control pills just for helping your menstrual cramps?
monkeys, 03.05.02
The Answer:
Dear monkeys,
Yes. Some health care providers prescribe the birth control pill for women who have uncomfortable symptoms related to menstruation. Relief of menstrual discomfort is one of the many non-contraceptive benefits (those other than pregnancy prevention) that the pill offers. Many women who take the pill have more regular, lighter, and shorter periods. The pill offers some relief from acne, iron deficiency anemia, excess body hair as well as menstrual cramps and premenstrual symptoms. The pill also offers protection against certain cancers, ectopic pregnancy, and pelvic inflammatory disease.
Visit a family planning clinic, an HMO, or private doctor for a prescription. Sometimes a visit/exam is needed. With prescription, the pill can be purchased at a clinic or drugstore.
