Your Question:
Dear Experts,
I just recently had sex for the first time. But now when I go to the bathroom it really burns. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do about it to make it stop? It really hurts! Please help!

The Answer:
Dear Jen_145,
The only way to know for sure why you are having pain during urination is to go to a clinician to have a physical exam. You can call 1-800-230-PLAN to make an appointment with your nearest Planned Parenthood health center for a confidential appointment.
Although we cannot make a diagnosis online, you may want to know that a common symptom of urinary tract infections is burning pain during urination. These infections can be caused by bacteria that have spread from the rectum to the vagina or penis and then to the urethra and bladder. Urinary tract infections can be spread by any kind of sex play that brings fecal material into contact with the vagina and urethra.
Burning pains during urination may also be a symptom of other infections that can be sexually transmitted.
Hope this information helps!
