Your Question:

Dear Experts,

I just found out my boyfriend has genital warts, can I get them from kissing? or by having oral sex?

brwneydsat

The Answer:

Dear brwneydsat,

Genital warts are sexually transmitted by certain human papilloma viruses (HPVs). Genital warts and other HPVs can be passed from one person to another by vaginal, anal, and oral intercourse. It is also possible that sex play without intercourse — called outercourse — can transmit genital warts. Mouth-to-mouth kissing, however, is a very low-risk activity for passing genital warts and other HPVs.

Using a latex barrier can reduce the risk when having oral sex. Glyde dams make good barriers for the vulva or anus, and condoms make good barriers for the penis. Many people use latex or plastic barriers that are non-lubricated or flavored for oral sex.

Using condoms during vaginal or anal intercourse can also reduce the risk of genital warts and other HPVs if they are used correctly and consistently.

Hope this information helps!

Take care,
